Detroit Sunday Funday -- 5 Fun Things to do in the City

Detroit is cool. There, I said it. I know what you’re thinking — I must be crazy. It’s true though. There are SO many things to do downtown that you’d never know about without giving it a fair chance. Detroit gets such a bad rap, but things have really changed over the last few years. It's this hidden gem that's full of so much life, vibrancy, and fun!

On Sunday, Pete & I had a little day date in Detroit. We always talk about wanting to spend more time downtown and then never do. I'm so glad we finally went down there last weekend. Today I wanted to share some of the fun things to do around the city!

One of my favorite pockets of the city is Corktown. This is just west of downtown Detroit and it has tons of great restaurants including Slow's BBQ which has some bomb.com mac and cheese. They also have a St. Patrick's Day parade every year and it is one of the most fun days in the city. There's tons of art on the buildings which is always fun to walk around and look at. We stopped by Bobcat Bonnie's for a drink and I had Flannel Mouth which is quickly becoming one of my favorite ciders. detroitdetroit Belle Isle is a huge park that has so many fun activities. In the summer you can have a picnic, go for a walk/run, explore the island, rent kayaks, or check out the aquarium. You can see the entire city skyline from the park so we walked around and looked at that, then we drove to the other side of the park and checked out this awesome lighthouse. Every time I go there I find something new that I haven't seen before which is always fun. detroitdetroitd22edited The Belt Alley is seriously one of the coolest spots in the entire city, in my opinion, of course. It's only been around for a couple of years. They renovated an old alley, invited artists to create works of art all over it, and opened up a few cool bars and an art gallery as well. There are lights hanging above the entire length of the alley. It looks like a scene from a movie, and every time I go there I can't help but be excited like a little kid. detroit The artwork is from artists near and far. Each piece is so different from the next, yet they all fit so perfectly together. detroit The next piece is Pete's favorite in the alley. I can't blame him, it's pretty cool!detroit Standby was one of the first spots to open in the alley. It has amazing cocktails and is always a fun time. It has a speakeasy feeling, but they do have a sign on the door so it's a bit easier to find than some of the speakeasies in cities like New York. detroit Then there's Campus Martius. This park is in the heart of downtown and where the Christmas tree is located during the holidays. I love this time of year downtown. The tree is right next to the ice skating rink so it's a fun place to take a date. There's a heated tent to grab a beer or a hot chocolate right by the rink too. In the summer they bring in sand and have a beach bar which is super cool. There's always something fun going on in this part of the city and their website has a great events calendar so you can always find what's happening there.detroitdetroit Take a stroll down Woodward Ave. Woodward is the main road that runs through downtown. Some great stores and restaurants have opened up shop on Woodward over the last few years including Nike, Kit & Ace, and the John Varvatos flagship store. detroit Catch a game -- Detroit is Hockeytown so this time of the year is the perfect time to catch a game at the Joe to watch the Wings play. It's the last season at Joe Louis Arena so it's a great season to catch a game there. If you find yourself in Detroit during the summer, then Comerica Park is where it's at. There are few things I enjoy more than watching a baseball game on a summer night. Comerica Park has some great views when the sun goes down too! detroit I hope you enjoyed taking a little peek into our Sunday funday AND this little city of Detroit that we love so much! xoxo, Sarah
